What would you do with an extra hour in your day?
Make time for your dreams
For most of us, learning to scuba dive is a wonderful achievement. But when you’re a full-time mum and can’t even swim at the age of 34, it’s something truly inspiring.
Ever since I was a young girl, I wanted to scuba dive. Being able to explore an underwater paradise seemed like the most amazing experience. But soon after my studies, I got married, then the kids came along and life just flew by. I hadn’t even learnt to swim!
When did you decide the time was right?
My husband and I were spending the Eid weekend in Fujairah a few years ago. I was sunbathing on the beach when one of the dive boats came in. The divers looked so inspired. I turned to my husband and said ‘I’m going to do that.’ He laughed, but when he saw how serious I was, he supported me all the way.
How did you make the time to pursue your goal?
Simple. I stopped sleeping in on Friday mornings. I realized that if I was to achieve my goal I’d have to make sacrifices. So I signed up for a swimming course in Dubai that began at 7am every Friday. Within 6 months I had learnt to swim confidently and within 9 months I got my Open Water Dive Certificate.
What would your advice be to others?
We all waste so much time in our lives, watching TV or sleeping a little bit later on weekends. Use that time productively and you’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish.
